What is a Smart City?

A smart city is a location in which traditional services are enhanced and made more efficient through digitalisation, ultimately benefiting and improving the lives of its inhabitants. Such ‘smartness’ is not only about increasing digital solutions throughout society, but also about creating a better quality of life for citizens. There is already a collection of cities across the globe that are classed as a ‘Smart City’, which includes: Dubai UAE, GIFT City India, Neom Saudi Arabia, Shanghai China, Amsterdam Netherlands, Brisbane Australia, Copenhagen Denmark and Milton Keynes UK.

How are Smart Cities Sustainable?

Smart cities utilise technology to improve the efficiency of urban operations and services, whilst respecting social, cultural, economic and environmental aspects. Such improvements can span everything from reducing greenhouse gas emissions to upgrading waste disposal facilities and integrating more efficient methods of heating or lighting in buildings. Such aspects are significant contributors to the environmental impact of a community, and so by improving them, smart cities are increasingly more sustainable than normal cities. As smart cities continue to be both created and advanced, it is expected that smart cities of the future will account for 75% of global energy consumption.

The construction industry relies on large quantities of raw materials, including man-made and natural products like wood. However, mass production can have a detrimental impact on the planet, making it more important than ever to ethically source materials.

Companies like Palmers Orangeries & Conservatories are dedicated to sustainable construction practices. According to their website, the Nottingham-based company plants a tree for every single one they cut down for construction projects, offsetting their impact on the planet. Investing in forest restoration is key for sustainable construction.

What is Sustainable Construction?

Sustainable construction defines an environmentally conscious way of building new houses, office buildings or home extensions. From sourcing sustainable materials to reducing the amount of waste produced from the construction process, there are several practical ways to improve the sector’s impact on the environment.

The sustainability of the construction process is measured by its impact on society, the environment and the economy. Known as the ‘people, planet and profits’ philosophy, this approach equips construction companies and customers with clear, practical guidance to sustainability.

Global experts like Elena Morettini and Alexandra Palt pave the way for environmentally conscious business practices. From renewable energy to ESG, such speakers are regularly booked for corporate events to share their advice with business leaders.

Ways to Ensure Sustainable Construction:

See our five top tips for ensuring sustainable construction!

Watch Your Waste

The production process creates a lot of waste. Hazardous waste, excess materials and onsite litter can pile up and create a big environmental problem. There are several ways to reduce waste on a construction site, including reusing materials and recycling where possible. The biggest change companies can make is to prepare before they step foot on the construction site. Plan which materials you need and how much is required to reduce the potential for unnecessary waste.

Pledge to Replant

Timber is commonly used in construction – however, a tree that takes decades to grow can be cut down within minutes, creating a large problem for the planet’s sustainability. There are several forestry replant organisations doing outstanding work across the world, thanks to donations from construction companies wanting to offset their timber use.

Design for Repurpose

Installation and construction projects are designed to stand the test of time. This is good news for longevity, but once the property owners are ready to sell and move on, these projects can be left empty and unused. To counter this, construction companies should design for repurposing rather than destroy! With mindful construction, a conservatory can be turned into an extended kitchen, or a family home can become an office.

Renew & Recycle

There is a new wave of construction equipment taking the industry by storm: electric. Gone are the days of petrol-powered products; now, zero-emission alternatives are widely available. Additionally, separating waste materials and making a conscious effort to reuse/recycle can drastically improve the impact that construction companies have on the planet.

Invest in Carbon Offsetting

Carbon offsetting initiatives are widely available and are a productive way to care for the planet. Rather than taking primary responsibility for your sustainability, such programmes use donations to invest in global environmental programmes. Calculate your carbon footprint, then invest in carbon offsetting initiatives to balance your impact on the planet.

It is no secret that we need to take action against climate change, and the irreversible damage that is being done to our planet. Sustainability and environmental activists across the globe are finding innovative ways in which we can decelerate climate change and live more sustainably. One of the main initiatives they have introduced is a circular economy, but the question is – what is a circular economy?

What is a Circular Economy?

The term ‘circular economy’ was introduced as a means of generating a more sustainable society, and encompasses an evolution of the way in which the world produces and consumes goods. In a circular economy, humans will reuse products and prioritise recycling and remanufacturing – instead of the current society that we live in, in which we ‘take, make and throw away’.

According to the Dame Ellen MacArthur Foundation, “The circular economy is a systems solution framework that tackles global challenges like climate change, biodiversity, loss, waste, and pollution”. It is also based on three principles:

  1. Eliminate waste and pollution
  2. Circulate products and materials (at their highest rate)
  3. Regenerate nature

Products will be redesigned so that they are reusable, durable, repairable and recyclable – which in turn will mean that they are less likely to be thrown away and far more sustainable products are being released into the world around us.

A new and inclusive economic paradigm, a circular economy will minimise pollution and extend the lifecycle of physical and natural assets whilst creating green jobs and keeping resource use within planetary boundaries.

Why Is a Circular Economy Important?

Introducing a circular economy is a crucial factor in slowing down climate change, something that we must as a society address. Natural resource extraction and processing contributes to almost 50% of greenhouse gas emissions, as concluded by the United Nations International Resource Panel, and thus emphasises the need to reduce the impact that material production has on the environment.

A circular economy has the potential to protect the environment from increased climate change, by reducing the levels of greenhouse gases that are released into the atmosphere during material production and preventing high volumes of materials from going into landfill.

A circular economy will help tackle crises on climate, pollution and biodiversity – by reducing habitat loss and waste pollution.

How Does a Circular Economy Work?

Circular Vs Linear Economy

The clue is in the name when it comes to the circular economy, the journey of goods and materials is circular. Within a circular economy, materials will be in a continuous flow, from initial production to being reused and recycled, time and time again.

When put into practice, a circular economy implies reducing waste to a minimum – and even when a product does come to the end of its life, the product is reused in some form through recycling – thus the product life cycle is considerably lengthened.

A circular economy is powered by the motto of ‘less raw material, less waste, fewer emissions’.

How Realistic is a Circular Economy?

The concept of a circular economy is incredibly realistic, with some countries having already made steps towards introducing circularity into their way of life. Although the concept may seem aspirational, the concept of circularity has also been adopted by many businesses – ensuring that their products are created with minimal greenhouse gas emissions, and are able to be reused and recycled.

The European Union have also declared that they are aiming to have a fully circular economy by the year 2050, once more emphasising the important reality of a circular economy.

How Can I Play a Part in a Circular Economy?

There are many ways in which you can contribute to the reality of a circular economy. Below are just some of the ways in which this can be achieved:

  • Buy products from companies that are committed to a circular economy
  • Reuse and recycle products, rather than just throwing them away
  • Reduce waste and pollution
  • Hire a speaker to learn more about the importance of a circular economy!

Fossil fuels currently dominate global energy production, accounting for 80% of the total energy supply. However, they are the leading cause of climate change, responsible for over 75% of greenhouse gas emissions. To combat this, a rapid shift to renewable energy is essential. Hiring a renewable energy expert speaker can help guide this transition effectively.

What Are The Different Types of Renewable Energy?

There are several types of renewable energy, including wind, solar, hydroelectric and bioenergy. Wind power is the largest source of renewable electricity in the UK, generated by onshore and offshore wind farms. Solar energy captures sunlight using panels, converting it into electricity via the photovoltaic effect. Hydroelectric power uses flowing or falling water, including waves and tides, to spin turbines and generate electricity. Bioenergy involves burning organic materials such as plants and food waste. Though it releases carbon dioxide, it is considered renewable as the materials can be regrown, absorbing carbon over time. These sources offer cleaner alternatives to fossil fuels.

What Are The Challenges of Renewable Energy?

One of the main challenges of renewable energy in the UK is its inconsistency. Solar and wind power depend on weather, making it difficult to produce a steady supply of electricity year-round. Unlike fossil fuels, which provide constant output, renewables can be unpredictable. To address this, there’s a growing push to develop better energy storage solutions, such as advanced, cost-effective batteries. These would store excess power generated during optimal conditions for later use. However, many renewable technologies are still developing and have yet to fully integrate into society at the same scale and reliability as fossil fuels. The transition remains ongoing.

Starting in 1970, Senator Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day, with the help of Congressman Pete McCloskey and Denis Hayes. After witnessing widespread disregard for the environment, inefficient consumption of copious amounts of leaded petrol and the viewing of air pollution as a sign of economic prosperity, the founder wanted to dispel those attitudes and shift environmentally damaging behaviours in America.

Catalysed by Rachel Carson’s New York Times bestseller, Silent Spring, which was published in 1962 to raise awareness for the environment, living organisms and the link between pollution and public health, the watershed moment created by the dissemination of such knowledge built the foundation for Earth Day. Seeking to tackle the prevalence of oil spills, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, loss of wilderness and the extinction of wildlife, the movement lead to the establishment of the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science is an annual celebration which takes place on the 11th of February 2026. A significant awareness day, it allows us to honour the achievements of many women and girls in science. With current research suggesting that women continue to only make up 28% of the workplace in STEM roles, it remains crucial that we support and inspire women to take the leap into science.

Here at the Sustainability Speakers Agency, we have selected our top International Day of Women and Girls in Science speakers to hire for events in 2026.

How can you observe the International Day of Women and Girls in Science?

There are many ways that the International Day of Women and Girls in Science can be observed throughout the community. Here are a few suggestions on how we recommend you commemorate this important event:

1. Learn about the contributions women have made to the STEM sectors

Many women have become trailblazers in the world of science. On the 11th of February, it may be beneficial to conduct some research into these inspirational women or hire one of our talented speakers who have empowered thousands of professionals across the UK.

2. Raise money for a science-centric or women’s charity

One of the best ways to raise awareness is to raise money! Fun, community-based activities like bake sales and sponsored events can build unity within your team, all while giving back to worthy causes. Go one step further and shape your event around the annual International Day of Women and Girls in Science theme.

The 2026 International Day of Women and Girls in Science theme is From Vision to Impact: Redefining STEM by Closing the Gender Gap: “Closing the gender gap matters not only for fairness, but also for the quality, relevance and impact of science, technology and innovation.”

2. Encourage peers and colleagues to focus on their passions
