Sue Garrard is a renowned thought leader on sustainable business, known for her instrumental role in embedding Unilever’s ambitious sustainable living plan. Presently, as the Founder of Sue Garrard Consulting, Sue provides cutting-edge advice on strategy and commitment to sustainability for some of the most prestigious organisations including Mars, Danone, O2 and Lloyds Bank among others. She is highly sought after for her profound knowledge of sustainability and regularly provides pro-bono advice for sustainability-focused organisations, in addition to sharing her knowledge on expert panels and through her keynote speaking engagements.
Whilst her career journey can be considered unconventional, Sue exhibits great talent in every role she undertakes. For several years she served as a Board Director for Fishburn Hedges a leading public relations and communications service. Following that, she spent some time working in the public sector, first as Director of Communications and then as Director General of Marketing Comms and Customer Strategy for the Department for Work and Pensions. During the same period, Sue also served as a Non-Executive Director for the Serious and Organised Crime Agency, before landing the role of SVP Global Communications at Unilever. Sue went on to become EVP of Sustainable Business Development and Communications at Unilever where she was credited for establishing sustainability as a driver of brand growth. By 2019 Unilever’s sustainable living brands were growing 67% faster than other brands and represented a whopping 70% of the company’s growth thanks to Sue’s input.
Highly respected and very influential, Sue was placed at number 13 on the Top 100 Women Sustainability Influencers Worldwide list by Forbes magazine. Furthermore, she holds several prestigious teaching positions including Fellow at the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, Visiting Fellow at Cranfield School of Business Management, and a Fellow at the RSA. Moreover, Sue recently sat on an expert panel advising the Ministry of Defence on the development of a Net Zero Carbon strategy and is Chair of Trustees for the private non-profit Blueprint for Better Business.
Believing in the importance of sustainability initiatives, Sue is an altruistic individual who has devoted her career towards making change, going further, she donated 20% of her income to charity in 2021.
