Vandana is an Indian scholar, environmental activist, food sovereignty advocate and ecofeminist whose work has resonated globally. Known as the “Gandhi of grain”, she has dedicated her life to challenging the industrialisation of agriculture and promoting sustainable practices. Her pioneering efforts in protecting native seeds and traditional farming methods have established her as a leading figure in environmental activism. Through her passionate commitment, she has inspired countless individuals and communities to embrace a more balanced and respectful relationship with nature.

Born in Dehradun, Vandana grew up surrounded by nature, influenced by a father who was a conservator of forests and a mother who was a dedicated farmer. She pursued a BA in Science at Punjab University in 1972 before obtaining a Master’s degree in Philosophy of Science at the University of Guelph in 1977. In 1978, she completed her PhD in the Philosophy of physics at the University of Western Ontario. Her interdisciplinary research later extended to science, technology and environmental policy at renowned Indian institutions. In 1982, she founded the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology, which paved the way for the creation of Navdanya in 1991, a national movement to protect diversity, especially of native seed.

Vandana has provided her expertise as an advisor to governments in India and abroad, as well as to non-governmental organisations including the International Forum on Globalisation, the Women’s Environment and Development Organisation and the Third World Network. Additionally, she authored the influential book, “Making Peace With the Earth,” which examines biodiversity and the intricate relationship between communities and the natural world. Over the years, her contributions have been recognised with numerous prestigious awards such as the coveted Alternative Nobel Prize, the Order of the Golden Ark, the Earth Day International Award and the Lennon ONO Grant for Peace.

Voted one of the Five Most Powerful Communicators of Asia by Asia Week, Vandana is celebrated for her eloquence and incisive insights on sustainability. Her numerous documentary interviews further attest to her exceptional ability to engage and inspire audiences with passion.
