Martin Koehring

Martin Koehring is a distinguished global expert in oceans, climate and sustainability, as well as a forward-thinking futurist with over twenty years’ experience. His visionary approach to environmental challenges has established him as a leading authority on sustainable practices worldwide. A prolific international speaker, he has captivated audiences with his insights, notably chairing the World Ocean Summit since 2019. His work embodies a commitment to bridging science, policy and innovation, ensuring that progress remains inclusive and environmentally sound, across continents.

In his early career, Martin began as a writer and economist, demonstrating exceptional analytical and narrative skills. In 2011 he joined “The Economist” as Europe Editor on Country Analysis, quickly progressing to roles including Managing Editor and Practical Lead in Sustainability, Climate Change and Natural Resources. He then became Head of the World Ocean Initiative, developing and implementing the initiatives goals such as the sustainable ocean economy, biodiversity and ocean health. This formative period laid a robust foundation for his later work in environmental sustainability that inspires lasting change.

Martin’s recent achievements highlight his continued leadership in the sustainability arena. In 2023 he was appointed Global Director of Impact at Forum for the Future, steering programme work to enhance global environmental impact. In 2024 he became a Senior Strategic Expert in Blue Economy with UNIDO, supporting initiatives for sustainable industrial development. Currently, Martin serves as Director of the Marine Conservation Society and as an Ocean and Finance Specialist at the Sustainable Blue Economy Finance Initiative. His recent roles reinforce his status as an influential change-maker, globally recognised.

His TEDx talk, ‘How a Just & Regenerative Mindset Can Help Us Navigate the Polycrisis’, a term encompassing five global crises: climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, injustice and conflicts, has resonated widely.
