Earth: The Power of the Planet

Iain Stewart is a leading geologist who is passionate about pressing societal and environmental issues. Currently, Iain is working as the Jordan-UK El Hassan bin Talal Research Chair in Sustainability and as a Professor of Geoscience Communication at the University of Plymouth, teaching future generations about the importance of action against climate change, natural disaster risk and geo-resources. Now booked as a sustainability speaker for events, Iain shares his passions for a future with sustainability at its centre.

After studying geography and geology at Strathclyde University, Iain went on to get his doctorate from The University of Bristol, researching earthquakes in Greece and Turkey. After a time spent teaching geology at the West London Institute of Higher Education and Brunel University, Iain embarked on a career as a broadcaster. A popular BBC presenter, Iain presented “Earth: The Power of the Planet,” “How to Grow a Planet,” “Journeys from the Centre of the Earth” and more.

Iain has devoted his career to various environmental organisations. He has formerly been a UNESCO Chair in Geoscience and Society, a Patron of the English Riviera Geopark and a member of the Scientific Board of UNESCO’s International Geological Programme. Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Iain is also the former Director of the Sustainable Earth Institute, and was previously the President of the Devon Wildlife Trust. The author of books such as “Plate Tectonics: Discover How Our Planet Works From the Inside Out,” “Earth: The Power of the Planet” and “Journeys From the Centre of the Earth”, Iain has claimed awards such as the 2014 Scientia Medal, the 2013 Atheston Spilhaus Award and the 2015 Senior Public Engagement Award from the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Iain is now booked as a sustainability expert for events. Having taught and lectured hundreds of students about the environmental issues of modern society, Iain is able to speak on topics such as natural disasters, climate change, geo-resources and more.
