Dan O’Neill is a wildlife filmmaker, field biologist, and explorer with a deep passion for biodiversity, remote environments, and advocacy through storytelling. Blending science with compelling visual media, Dan has emerged as a powerful voice in both environmental and LGBTQ+ spaces. As a specialist in exploring the planet’s most challenging ecosystems, his work captures the raw beauty of nature while shedding light on critical conservation issues. His unique ability to connect with audiences through film and first-hand exploration has made him a sought-after sustainability speaker, valued for his authenticity and wide-reaching impact.

Dan’s journey began with a BSc in Zoology from the University of Sheffield in 2016, followed by a Master’s in Wildlife Filmmaking from UWE Bristol in partnership with the BBC Natural History Unit. This academic foundation propelled him into a career where scientific expertise met creative storytelling. Over the years, he built extensive field experience, working as a mammalogist and expedition leader for more than a decade. His leadership on expeditions to the Northern Amazon, including the 2021 Rewa River journey in Guyana, showcased his ability to combine rigorous field science with compelling visual narratives, earning him a reputation as a leading voice in wild places.

In recent years, Dan has fronted several high-profile natural history productions, including National Geographic’s Zombie Animals, Curiosity Stream’s Giants, and Nature’s Ultimate Survivors for Xumo Play. As the 2023 Explorer in Residence for the Snow Leopard Trust, he brought vital attention to endangered species. His creative pursuits also extend to music and advocacy, co-creating the soundtrack for the Climate of Change podcast alongside Imogen Heap, and teaming up with drag artist Bimini for Attitude Magazine’s ocean campaign, #SeaOurFuture. These projects demonstrate his ability to merge environmental messaging with culture in ways that resonate across generations.

Dan is regularly invited to speak on sustainability because he bridges science, storytelling, and social inclusion like few others can. Whether engaging with global audiences through film or connecting directly at events, he inspires action and empathy. His lived experience as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, combined with his fieldwork and media presence, allows him to speak from a place of authenticity, making him an essential voice for a more inclusive and sustainable future.

“Dan was an absolute delight to work with. He gave an inspiring talk to our college and university students who were fascinated and intrigued in equal measure. Dan discussed both his route into documentary filmmaking and his experiences on various shoots across the world including some hair raising encounters with a variety if wild animals!
