Professor Sir Brian Hoskins, a mathematician by training, has since become one of the most highly regarded meteorologists of our time who has been lecturing on the subject at the University of Reading since 1981. His research has spanned a large range of weather and climate research, wanting to better understand how phenomena in the atmosphere work. Throughout his fruitful career, Brian was an important figure advising public policy matters on climate change and shares his expertise on climate change and meteorology in his keynote speeches.

Having gained a BA and PhD in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge, Brian completed his doctorate thesis on Atmospheric Frontogenesis. Upon graduating, Brian then became a Reader in Atmospheric Modelling before then beginning his career as a Professor in Meteorology at the University of Reading. His work has become prolific both in the UK and internationally as he was the Vice-Chair of the Joint Scientific Committee for the World Climate Research Programme and President of the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences. His work within the UK has played a major role in the 2000 Report by The Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution which proposed a carbon emission reduction by 2050.

As a leader in his field, Brian has published in countless Journals since 1994 and is a published author of three books, two children’s books ‘Rosie’s Special Day’ and ‘A Topsy-turvy Day’, and ‘Fluid Dynamics of the Mid-Latitude Atmosphere (Advancing Weather and Climate Science)’. Brian has been awarded Honorary degrees from both Bristol University and the University of East Anglia and has received numerous top awards from both the UK and USA Meteorological Society. He has also received the Buys Ballot Medal which is only awarded in the Netherlands every 10 years as a testament to his contributions to meteorology.

With numerous awards and accolades to his name, it comes as no surprise that Brian has also been the president of, and is a fellow and member of, numerous meteorological societies. Brian’s work in his field will affect generations to come, and has already had a massive impact on our ability to predict, and our understanding of, the weather. When looking for your next sustainability speaker, who is able to boast that he has advised the UK government on climate change, do not miss your chance to hire Brian Hoskins.
