Robert’s early career set a groundbreaking foundation for his environmental endeavours. In 1984, he embarked on ‘Southern Quest’, a 900-mile unassisted march to the South Pole. Then, in 1987, Swan led an international team to the North Pole, they producing educational films and cleaned up rubbish in the Arctic wilderness. By 1989, Robert was the first person to walk both the North and South Poles unassisted. In 1996, Robert organise a team for One Step Beyond, the South Pole Challenge to fulfil the mission to remove and recycle 1500 tonnes of rubbish from Bellingshausen station. After eight long years of work the site was cleared and penguins moved back into the space.

Robert’s more recent achievements further illustrate his commitment to sustainable exploration. In 2008, he was appointed Honorary Professor of Environment at Leeds Metropolitan University, a role that highlighted his academic contributions. His 2009 co-authored book, ‘Antarctica 2041: My Quest to Save the Earth’s Last Wilderness’, brought urgent environmental issues to the forefront. In 2015, he received an Honorary Doctor of Science from Durham University. Never one to shy away from adventure, in 2017, Robert embarked on the South Pole Energy Challenge, a 600-mile journey with his son using only renewable energy.
