Lord Adair Turner

Adair Turner is a distinguished voice in global sustainability, renowned for his influential leadership in climate policy and economic reform. In 2024, he was appointed Chair of the Energy Transitions Commission, a global coalition of businesses and organisations united by the goal of achieving a net zero global economy by mid-century. Adair began his career at BP before moving into the finance sector, where he worked at Chase Manhattan Bank and later joined McKinsey & Co in 1994. His leadership skills and economic acumen led to high-level roles, including Director-General of the Confederation of British Industry in 1995 and Vice-Chairman of Merrill Lynch Europe in 2000. He went on to chair the Low Pay Commission in 2002 and the Pensions Commission in 2003, establishing a strong foundation in policy reform and public service. Adair was the founding Chair of the UK’s Climate Change Committee, and under his leadership, the UK government committed to cutting emissions by 34% by 2020 and he later recommended a 60% cut by 2030. In 2015, he co-authored the report that launched the Global Apollo Programme, advocating for increased investment in clean energy innovation. His broader influence on environmental policy continued through his work with the Institute for New Economic Thinking and his election as an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society in 2016.
