Lamia Messari-Becker

Lamia Messari-Becker is a globally recognised sustainability keynote speaker, civil engineer and policy advisor whose work focuses on energy transition, circular economy and climate-resilient cities. As Professor of Energy-Efficient Building Technology at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), she is at the forefront of research and practice shaping how societies design, build and adapt their built environments. Her perspective is defined by a holistic view of sustainability, balancing climate protection, resource efficiency and social responsibility, while delivering solutions that are technically robust and economically viable.

Lamia’s career spans academia, industry and government advisory roles, giving her rare credibility across sectors. Prior to her appointment at KIT, she served as Professor of Building Technology and Building Physics at the University of Siegen, where she led research on sustainable construction, life-cycle planning and climate adaptation. Earlier in her career, she held senior leadership roles in an internationally operating engineering consultancy, delivering complex projects across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. These projects ranged from energy-efficient buildings to large-scale urban developments, grounding her academic work firmly in real-world delivery.

A defining element of Lamia’s impact is her contribution to national and international sustainability policy. She was appointed as the first civil engineer to the German Government’s Expert Council on the Environment, advising on sustainable urban development, climate protection and infrastructure strategy. She is also a Member of the Club of Rome, contributing to global efforts to advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Her work consistently challenges narrow approaches to decarbonisation, advocating integrated solutions that combine renewables, resource-efficient materials, circular construction methods and neighbourhood-based planning. Across her career, she has contributed to over 50 construction and consultancy projects and authored more than 80 publications influencing policy and industry practice.
