Asha De Vos is an internationally acclaimed Sri Lankan marine biologist and sustainability speaker renowned for pioneering long-term blue whale research in the Northern Indian Ocean. Currently serving as an Adjunct Research Fellow at the Oceans Institute of the University of Western Australia, Asha is celebrated as Sri Lanka’s first deep sea explorer and a passionate advocate for diversity and equity in marine conservation. With a compelling blend of scientific insight and inspiring storytelling, Asha delivers impactful sustainability messages to diverse audiences.

In the early stages of a distinguished career, Asha earned a BSc in Marine and Environmental Biology from the University of St Andrews, an MSc in Biology from the University of Oxford, and a PhD in Marine Biology and Physical Oceanography from the University of Western Australia. In 2008, Asha launched the Sri Lankan Blue Whale Project, the first long-term study of blue whales in the Northern Indian Ocean. This groundbreaking initiative laid the foundation for transformative marine research and showcased a deep commitment to ocean conservation.

Expanding on these early successes, Asha founded Oceanswell in 2017, becoming its Executive Director. Oceanswell is Sri Lanka’s first marine conservation research and education organisation. Through this platform, Asha has driven critical research and educational programmes that have been featured by the BBC, The New York Times, and National Geographic. Asha’s work has earned WINGS WorldQuest Women of Discovery Sea Award, inclusion in the BBC 100 Women list, the title Sea Hero of the Year, and recognition as one of the Asian Scientist 100.
