Tony Juniper is a prominent British environmentalist, sustainability advocate, and author, renowned for his contributions to environmental conservation, sustainability, and climate change activism. With a career spanning over three decades, Tony has been instrumental in promoting sustainable practices and raising awareness about pressing environmental challenges. His expertise in the field is vast, covering areas such as biodiversity, climate change, and sustainable development, with a special emphasis on the critical role of natural ecosystems in maintaining the planet’s ecological balance.

Tony’s advocacy work is rooted in his early career with Friends of the Earth, a major environmental organisation where he served in various capacities. His leadership as Executive Director of Friends of the Earth saw significant campaigns aimed at reducing carbon emissions, preserving natural habitats, and advocating for policies supporting sustainable development. Tony was at the forefront of Friends of the Earth’s Big Ask campaign, which helped catalyse the UK’s Climate Change Act in 2008—the first legally binding climate change law in the world. This landmark legislation committed the UK to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and it has since served as a model for climate legislation globally.

In addition to his work with Friends of the Earth, Tony has held influential roles, including serving as the Chair of Natural England, where he worked to protect and enhance England’s natural environment. He has been a vocal advocate for incorporating nature-based solutions into climate action, emphasising the need to protect biodiversity to combat climate change effectively. Tony argues that preserving and restoring ecosystems such as forests, wetlands, and peatlands can play a crucial role in absorbing carbon dioxide and enhancing resilience against climate impacts. In 2017, he was appointed CBE for his services to conservation – a matter of great pride.

As an author, Tony has published several influential books that make complex environmental issues accessible to the public. His works include “What Has Nature Ever Done for Us?”, which underscores the importance of ecosystem services and how natural systems support human life. Through his writings, he aims to inspire individuals, businesses, and policymakers to take sustainable actions that balance ecological health with economic development. Other titles authored by Tony include “Climate Change”, “The Science of Our Changing Planet”, “Rainforest Dispatches” & “What Nature Does for Britain”. He has been an essential part of shows such as Planet Earth: The Future & Harmony.

In addition to being a Fellow at the University of Cambridge’s Institute for Sustainability Leadership Tony’s advocacy extends into the policy realm, where he regularly engages with government officials, corporations, and civil society to promote sustainability practices. His approach combines scientific rigor with pragmatic solutions, pushing for a systemic shift towards sustainability at every level of society. Tony Juniper’s dedication has made him a key figure in sustainability advocacy, demonstrating the importance of collective responsibility in addressing the climate and ecological crises. This is evident from his official client rating of 9.7/10 as a sustainability keynote speaker. His work continues to inspire and guide efforts toward a sustainable, resilient future.
