Sarah Begum is an acclaimed explorer, filmmaker, and advocate whose work in sustainability, STEM, and women’s empowerment has earned her global recognition. Known for her fearless approach to adventure and storytelling, Sarah has received endorsements from high-profile figures like Bear Grylls, Jane Goodall, David Attenborough, and Hollywood actor Kevin Hart. Her work as an explorer and activist was spotlighted by The Guardian’s San Miguel Rich List, which named her one of the world’s leading trailblazers. Her career took off at the age of 21 when she journeyed to the Amazon Rainforest to live with the Huaorani tribe. Immersing herself in their daily lives, she was granted the title of Amazon Warrior Queen, a symbolic role that strengthened her commitment to preserving their land. This experience became the foundation for her debut documentary, Amazon Souls, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and gained international acclaim. Using the power of media to drive change, Sarah later acted as an advocate for the tribe, helping to present a bilateral agreement to the Ecuadorian government, urging them to protect Indigenous lands from exploitation. Her efforts underscore her mission to safeguard both cultural heritage and the natural environment.
As a passionate STEM Ambassador, Sarah works to ignite interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, especially among young women. Through her role as a presenter for the BBC, she created content on educational initiatives like the Dr Who-themed coding kit, which aimed to engage youth in technology and coding. Additionally, she hosted the space-focused series Spaced Out!, where she facilitated discussions with industry leaders and innovators in the field of space exploration and technology. Sarah’s work in STEM seeks to bridge the gap between inspiration and action, encouraging the next generation to engage with cutting-edge industries shaping the future.
In addition to her media and educational contributions, Sarah is committed to humanitarian and environmental causes. The time she spent with a group of students at lunch after the lecture – the most popular lunch of the lecture series in the last 2 years – and the effort she made to question and advise each of them is a testament to her passion for people.
